Standing Up for his Patients – But is he Paying the Price?

David Nunn, the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Guy’s Hospital who a few weeks ago lost his temper with David Cameron, Nick Clegg and entourage on a walk-around and publicity shoot, is now conspicuous in his absence from the hospital.

Mr Nunn, who became an instant internet hit – not to mention a hero amongst many in the NHS – stormed into the ward as politicians prepared to pose for photographs.  For whilst Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg had indeed stripped to bare arms and washed and scrubbed in accordance with the hospital’s infection control policy, it appeared that the camera crew and hangers on had not.  Mr Nunn wasted no time on niceties as he literally banished them all from his ward.

So it seemed, for once, a small victory for the staff of the NHS over the might of Downing Street – until now.  Because it now appears that Mr Nunn is not at work.  The press department Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust have stated that he has not been suspended and is simply on leave.  However, all staff have been instructed not to speak to the press about his mysterious absence.

Several of Mr Nunn’s work colleagues dispute the official line and say that the hospital was furious about his outburst and that the trust is trying to remove him from his post.  He might not be officially suspended, but it appears that his seemingly ‘enforced leave’ is merely a play on words.
